2017 Chevy Suburban – Naperville, IL
With the large SUV and truck segment in such high demand as 2016 comes to a close, it only makes sense to see brands selling refreshed versions of their fan favorite models. The 2017 Chevy Suburban in Naperville, IL is a perfect example of this, and while it didn’t receive an entire redesign, the new features that are thrown on are more than enough to make this SUV a serious contender for the upcoming year. It still has that stout and rugged appearance that you’d expect from a full-size SUV, along with plenty of interior passenger and storage space. But, it also has some features that are available to make it even more luxurious. Of course, the interior found on higher trim levels is more luxury-oriented. Finally, the single V8 engine option has plenty of power to get the job done. While that might seem like a hindrance, it allowed Chevy to pour all of its attention into one engine for this SUV — a strategy that paid off quite nicely.
The Suburban started the SUV movement back in the 1930s, so it deserves to be refreshed and updated year after year. When it debuted, it was the biggest utility vehicle offered by Chevy. In 2016, as possibly their most recognizable SUV ever created, that fact still remains. Of course, there are upsides and downsides to the SUV segment. The large size means it’s safer to drive, can handle winter weather better, and has more room for passengers and cargo. Bigger and beefier engines need to be thrown under the hood to help with the immense size, which means more power going to wheels. While it might not be as fast as some of the smaller vehicles, it makes up for that snag in capability, utility, and towing capacity.
Fuel economy is — obviously — not that great compared to smaller vehicles, and it might not be the best for navigating cramped city streets or parking. Then again, every vehicle has its strengths and weaknesses. But, the Suburban is one of the rare few where the positive qualities outweigh the negative ones in a landslide.
Max Towing Capacity
On the performance side of things, you’re in for a real treat with the 2017 Chevy Suburban.
The driving force under the hood of all Suburban models is a 5.3-liter V8 engine that produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s accompanied by a six-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive with a locking rear differential is standard. Four-wheel drive with a single-speed transfer case is an available option, but should only be taken by those looking for some serious off-road performance. For towing, a two-speed transfer case comes with the Max Trailering and Z71 Off-Road packages. When equipped with the trailering package, the Suburban can tow up to 8,300 pounds.
I mentioned earlier that fuel economy isn’t that great compared to smaller cars. While that statement is true of all large truck and SUVs, the Suburban is able to claim bragging rights for best-in-class fuel economy, rated at 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway for rear-wheel drive models, and 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway for four-wheel-drive variants.
Don’t worry about merging on the highway either, since a rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive Suburban can do a 0-60 mph sprint in about 7.2 seconds. A very fast time for a vehicle this large.
On the inside of this rugged and capable design is an interior that’s designed to provide you with all the comforts of home while you’re on the road. It features sophistication and comfort, and unparalleled utility that only a vehicle of this caliber is able to provide.
Along with the ability to transport up to seven people — while still having two bucket seats in the second row — the Chevy Suburban has plenty of room to carry the entire family, friends, and any supplies you might need. 39.3 cu. ft. of storage space is behind the third row, and the center console is large enough to hold a laptop. Door room storage has plenty of room for water bottles, umbrellas, and any other small items you can imagine. If you need more space for just you and your significant other, then fold all the seats down and experience 121.7 cu. ft. of maximum storage space.
On the luxury side of things, the 2017 Suburban provides plenty of comfort and convenience spread throughout its trim levels. While the range-topping trim is the pinnacle of luxury for the lineup, a lot of the luxury features found on it can be added as optional for the lower trims as well. If you don’t want to go full-on in the luxury department, you can spice up a lower trim with some of those amenities.
Some of the luxury-oriented features are found in the 12-way power-adjustable heated and vented front bucket seats, heated second-row bucket seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a 10-speaker Bose premium surround-sound system, sunroof, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and many more. Power-folding mirrors, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, and a power-operated, hands-free tailgate in the Luxury Package all help make the Suburban just a little more special.
The design is massive, and that’s very apparent when sitting behind the wheel of this vehicle. It’s a truck-based SUV, which means it’s not nearly as maneuverable as the car-based crossover SUVs on the road. You’ll end up getting really good at multipoint turns in smaller areas, but might not always manage to find curb-side parking if you take it into the city for a weekend getaway. But at the same time, there is no other vehicle on the road like the Suburban that’s able to deliver the same tremendous amount of utility for such a reasonable price — and it’s all thanks to the design.
While a lot of this utility comes from the Suburban’s spacious interior, the outside of the design still lends a helping hand in that regard.
With a length of nearly 17 feet, the Suburban’s design has no issue carrying a lot of people, packing in the cargo, and towing an 8,300 pound trailer all at the same time. How is this possible? Unlike crossover SUVs, which use a car-based platform, full-size SUVs like the Suburban are built with a tough, body-on-frame, truck-like construction. If the design or frame wasn’t as strong, the Suburban wouldn’t be able to carry and tow as much as it currently boasts. Thanks to its truck-like construction, a four-wheel-drive system is present. Combine that with the durability and rugged nature of the design, and the Suburban is a go-anywhere and do-anything vehicle.
